Summary

Digital Rare Book Collections

The University of Illinois Digital Rare Book Collection is a diverse collection of imprints from our special collections libraries generated through scholar requests, for preservation purposes, or as part of digital humanities projects in progress. Please bear in mind that many other rare items are digitized and are accessible in subject-oriented collections within Illinois Harvest or via a link in the online catalog record.

RBML selects rare books for digitization and prioritizes their project queue. DCC digitizes content for selected ongoing projects weekly. Ongoing and past collectiosn include Ise Mongotari, the Emblematica collection and the Cavagna colletion.

Specifications

Cataloging status

  • RBML reviews the catalog record upon selecting and prioritization in digital queue.

File Naming

  • Name files with 8 digit padded number (ex. 00000001, 00000002, 00000003)
  • If digitization of multiple volumes happens during digitization sessions, added bibid to file name (must be removed later before ingest into Medusa) (ex. Bibid_00000001)

  • RCAM or BC100

Deliverables (file formats)

  • Preservation masters tif for Medusa
  • Access tif for HathiTrust

  • 600 DPI
  • Fixed pixel array
  • Adobe RGB
  • 16 bit
  • Include target item level target (beginning/end of volume)
  • Crop outside page edge

Access

  • 400 DPI
  • 3000 pixels on the long edge

  • Include appropriate production note/blank
